Build the Starter Controller

Study a complete standard-library baseline and a separate model adapter contract.

    The Problem: Turning the Design Into a Complete Program

    Small pseudocode examples often omit the checks that make a tool loop reviewable. This listing brings the task, synthetic data, exact tool validation, bounded controller, and handover record together in one Python 3.12 (or later) program using only the standard library. It contains no filesystem reads, network connection, arbitrary shell, simulator invocation, job submission, or file writes. Its only external effect when executed successfully is printing a synthetic JSON packet and one PASS: line to the console. No model call is made or claimed here.

    Note

    ScriptedPolicy is a deterministic mechanics baseline, NOT a true LLM agent. Its three choices are fixed. ModelAdapter is a separate integration contract whose transport must be supplied through an approved implementation; it is never instantiated by the default entry point.

        assert evidence[0]["rows"] == [
            {"line": i, "text": text} for i, text in enumerate(LOG_LINES, 1)]
        assert evidence[1]["rows"] == [
            {"line": i, "text": text} for i, text in enumerate(SPEC_LINES, 1)]
        assert evidence[2]["rows"] == list(HISTORY)
        assert [event["tool"] for event in result["events"]] == [
            "searchlogs", "readspec", "getrunhistory"]
        assert all(event["outcome"] == "ok" for event in result["events"])
        print(json.dumps(result, indent=2))
        print("PASS: scripted synthetic fixture mechanics only; no LLM evaluated")

    Read the Expected Synthetic Result

    Read the listing from the bottom upward once: the entry point supplies ScriptedPolicy to run. The policy requests the log, specification, and history, then asks to stop. Assuming each call returns within the cooperative deadline, the specified outcome is four choices, three successful tool events, evidence references E1 through E3, and status handoff_requested. E1 contains two matching rows; E2 contains two specification rows; E3 contains three history records. These are expectations derived from the code; the listing's assertions check them when it runs, and they are not a measurement of any model.

    Before printing, the entry point asserts the expected status, step count, evidence count, source identities, synthetic markers, complete fixture rows, and successful tool events. Only after those checks pass does it print the JSON and exactly one completion marker: PASS: scripted synthetic fixture mechanics only; no LLM evaluated. The fixture's FAIL values inside JSON describe the synthetic regression, not a failing controller check. There is no separate failure marker on success. These assertions check the default baseline; exercises with smaller budgets or invalid requests should inspect run's returned state separately rather than reuse the baseline entry-point expectations.

    Notice that all three tool results retain synthetic=True and fixture-v1. The result-size counter is derived by serialization rather than a guessed token count. The unknowns stay unresolved because the program has no waveform reader or configuration-equivalence checker. It does not synthesize a diagnosis. The event list records successful reads or fixed error codes. It does not retain a model's hidden reasoning, raw failed response, credential, or arbitrary transport exception text.

    Exercise and Expected Checks

    Review the program manually with max_steps=2, then substitute a chooser proposal whose search limit is True. The first review should end with step_budget and E1/E2 only. The second should end blocked with INVALID_INTEGER and no accepted evidence for the invalid call. Next request readspec for lab/protected/design.txt: expect PROTECTED_DATA. Change the path to lab/spec/../spec/reset-v3.txt: expect PATH_NOT_ALLOWED. A reviewer may execute these checks later in an approved environment; the course author has not run them.

    Check yourself Does providing ModelAdapter automatically create a live model connection?

    No. It requires an injected, approved transport that returns an action JSON string. The default program uses ScriptedPolicy and never constructs a model transport.

    An Honest Optional Model Connection

    Eight-node optional adapter boundary shows an approved transport and runtime returning a proposal that must pass controller and tool validation before any read.
    Optional design only: the default scripted baseline bypasses this unimplemented model connection.

    To replace the baseline, first choose an organization-approved hosted service or approved local inference runtime and confirm that the intended data may be sent there. Keep the controller and tools unchanged. Implement transport(request, remaining_seconds) outside this lesson: preserve the trusted policy separately from untrusted evidence, map the request into the runtime's documented message format, enforce response-stream and I/O limits, extract only the proposed action, and return a JSON string. Instantiate ModelAdapter with that transport and pass it to run only after approval and evaluation. Do not put credentials or real logs into this example.

    Local execution is not automatically private or authorized: endpoints, logs, model provenance, access controls, and retention still need review. Hosted access is not automatically prohibited either; approval depends on the organization's rules and data classification. There is no pretend endpoint or fabricated success response here. The adapter describes what integration code must do, while leaving provider authentication, model selection, and runtime details to the current official documentation for the approved system.

    Limits and Sources

    The transport and tool implementations are trusted Python code, not sandboxed plugins. The loop's deadline is cooperative and cannot cancel blocked I/O. Post-response size checks do not cap upstream buffering. For the specified language behavior, consult Python 3.12 JSON, typing.Protocol, and time.monotonic. Evaluate any connected model separately rather than presenting the scripted trace as model performance.
