    COI Reduction Is Exact

Cone reduction removes only logic that cannot affect the property or any assumption: it cannot change a result. Assumptions and abstractions can.

    Why it matters

A team feared that the tool's cone reduction was hiding bugs: fast proofs felt like proofs that looked away. They disabled the reduction and waited a week for the same answer. The fear confused three different things: cone reduction, which is exact; assumptions, which delete behaviours; and abstraction, which replaces logic. Only the last two can change a result, and only with a written justification. This lesson separates them.

Job of this lesson: show that cone-of-influence reduction is exact, and show what can change a result instead: an assumption or an abstraction.

    The core idea

The cone is computed from the property together with every assumption, cover and constraint. Logic outside all of them has no path to anything the run reads, so it cannot change a trace the run can see and the verdict is identical with or without it. An assumption on a register that no assertion reads is not outside the run: the register is inside the assumption's cone, and the assumption can delete the behaviours that matter. Three mechanisms, three guarantees:

    Mechanism

    What it removes

    Exact?

    How it fails

    Cone reduction

Logic with no path to any property, assumption or cover

    Yes, always

    Never changes the verdict.

    Assumption

    Input and state behaviours

    No, by design

Too strong: hides bugs, false pass.

    Abstraction

    Logic replaced by simpler logic

    Only if sound

    Too coarse: spurious counterexample.

Worked example: one FIFO, four runs

Run A proves the FIFO. Run B adds an 8-bit free-running counter that no property reads and brings it out on a port, so it survives to the solver instead of being deleted as dead logic before any solver sees it; the same properties prove with the same status. Run C plants the bug inside the cone on the same module and the verdict flips at step 6. Run D adds an assumption on the unrelated counter, assume (unrelated_cnt == 3 && unrelated_cnt == 4), a contradiction about a register no assertion reads: the buggy design now passes. Reduction did not change that result; the assumption did.

    What the review looks for

    • Nobody proposes disabling cone reduction to be safe; the evidence is the pair of runs above.

    • Every assumption carries a written justification, including those on registers no assertion reads, and a cover showing what remains.

    • Abstractions are named as abstractions, with their soundness argument; a mutation inside each cone flips the matching property.

    Verify and debug

When a result looks too good, suspect the assumptions, never the cone reduction: list the assumes, read the covers, and compare the assumption list with the cone of each property. When a run is too slow, suspect the cone is wider than expected, and either narrow the property or abstract honestly. Never tighten assumptions to force a proof without recording why the removed behaviours are impossible.

Blaming cone reduction for a false pass. Symptom: the team distrusts fast proofs while the cause sits in the assumption list. Cause: confusing the exact mechanism with the inexact ones. Fix: keep the reduction, audit the assumptions, read the covers. Found by comparing the cone with the assumption list: Run D passes because of its assumption, not because of the reduction.

Tightening assumptions to get a result. Symptom: a proof that completes only after the environment is fenced in. Cause: treating assumption-tightening as a safe optimisation. Fix: it is the last resort, with a written justification and a neighbour proof for every assume. Found by the assumption register growing while the covers shrink.

“Does cone reduction risk false confidence?” Answer: no. It removes only logic with no path to the property or to any assumption, so the verdict is identical. False confidence comes from assumptions and from unsound abstraction. Show the runs: the extra counter changes nothing, the mutation inside the cone flips the result, and an assumption about the unrelated counter hides the bug.

Check yourself Run B adds state but the verdict is unchanged. Why is that evidence for exactness?

The added counter is outside the cone of every property, assumption and cover, so none of them can observe it; an exact reduction ignores exactly such logic.

Check yourself Run D passes a buggy design although the counter is unrelated to every assertion. Which mechanism is responsible?

The assumption. An assumption on any register constrains the run, so the register is in the assumption's cone, and a contradiction removes every behaviour, the bug trace included.
