    A Bug Simulation Misses

A push into a full FIFO needs a specific run of cycles: random simulation with a quiet push rate waits about 100,000 cycles, a bounded check needs depth 7.

    Why it matters

A FIFO passed every random regression, then lost a word in the lab on the first morning. The bug needs a specific run: reset, four pushes with no pop, then a fifth push. The bench (illustrative) pushed in one cycle in ten and popped in half, so the queue was almost never full and no test pushed into a full queue. The bounded proof found the bug at depth 7. This lesson makes the contrast honest, with a calculation that matches the story.

Job of this lesson: show one deep bug that random simulation reaches only after very many cycles and a bounded check finds at its depth, and say what the proof does not tell you.

    The core idea

Simulation samples sequences; a bounded check asks whether any sequence within N steps breaks the property. Rarity does not slow the check down; only the depth needed to reach the trigger matters. For simulation, rarity is everything, and it depends on the stimulus model: the same design is easy or hard to break depending on how often the bench pushes and pops.

    Worked example: the overflow bug

The bug is a push accepted while the FIFO is full: the count reaches 5 and the oldest word is overwritten. The shortest trace is reset, four pushes, and a fifth push with no pop (read it in the previous lesson), so the failure is at step 6 and depth 7 finds it. Depth 6 passes: bounded to 6, one step short of the trigger.

The fixed design is the partner: the same file proves. Root cause of the bug: the push path does not check the full flag. Fix: accept a push only when not full.

How long does the bench wait?

The script below models the occupancy of the FIFO as a Markov chain (the next occupancy depends only on the current one) and solves it exactly with fractions for the expected number of cycles until the first push without a pop arrives at count 4. The stimulus is illustrative: push probability and pop probability per cycle. It reproduces 64 cycles for push 1/2 and pop 1/2, about 101,360 for push 1/10 and pop 1/2, and about 3.2 million for push 1/20. A second, independent method (propagating probability mass) confirms the small case, and a calculator with the wrong trigger is caught by the same checks.

With push 1/2 and pop 1/2 the bench meets the trigger within 64 cycles on average. With a quiet push rate it needs about 101,360, and tests of a few thousand cycles will usually never see it. The proof does not care about the rate. It also does not say the bug is the only one: a bug where count drifts from the pointers never trips the range check within 12 steps and falls to an internal consistency property at step 3, and a word with its top bit cleared passes every occupancy property and falls only to the data check.

    What the review looks for

    • The counterexample table names the trigger step and the property that fired.

    • The lesson states the bound that finds the bug and the bound that misses it.

    • The fixed partner proves; the bug variant fails at the stated step.

    • No claim is made about properties outside the checked set.

    Verify and debug

Replay the trace on the real design and confirm the trigger is legal in the real environment: a push into a full FIFO must be possible, or the counterexample is a modelling artefact and the fix belongs in the assumptions. Then confirm the fix removes exactly the failing behaviour by rerunning both depths.

A bench that never fills the queue. Symptom: every regression passes and a long lab run fails. Cause: a stimulus model whose push rate keeps the occupancy low, plus coverage that counts cycles rather than corners. Fix: a cover or functional coverage point on push-while-full in both the bench and the formal harness, and a bounded check deep enough for the trigger. Found by the depth pair above: depth 6 passes, depth 7 fails.

“Your proof passes; the bench never hit the bug either. Why should I believe the proof?” Answer: because they fail differently. The bench samples from a distribution, so a rare combination may never appear; the proof asks whether any sequence within the bound breaks the property. Show the failing partner: the same proof on the bug variant returns the trigger step.

Check yourself Push 1/10 and pop 1/2: how long does the bench wait on average, and what does the proof need?

About 101,360 cycles for the stimulus model of the script (illustrative), and depth 7 for the proof, whatever the model.

Check yourself The range proof passes on the data-corruption variant. Is the block proven?

No. Each property covers its own corner. The corruption needs the data-integrity property, which the occupancy proof never checks.
