Assume, Assert, Cover: the Three Roles

What each directive means to the engine: assume restricts inputs, assert asks for a violation, cover asks for a witness.

    Why it matters

Two harnesses checked the same FIFO. One proved clean and the other failed in seconds, and the difference was a single keyword: an assertion on an input where an assumption belonged, and an assumption on an output where an assertion belonged. The directives look alike and mean opposite things. This lesson fixes each role from the engine's point of view, then runs both misplacements.

Job of this lesson: define what assume, assert, and cover each mean to the engine, with the side-of-the-interface rule and both misplacements demonstrated.

    The core idea

To the engine the three directives are three questions. An assumption restricts the inputs: it deletes every behaviour that breaks it, whatever signal it names. An assertion asks whether a violation is reachable. A cover asks whether a witness is reachable. The placement rule follows: assume on inputs only, for rules the environment owes you; assert on outputs only, for what you owe; cover the situations the properties care about.

    Directive

    Engine meaning

    Placed on

    Misplaced effect

    assume

    Restrict inputs; delete behaviours

    Inputs, environment rules

On an output: deletes every input sequence that makes the output take that value, so the bug-triggering sequences vanish.

    assert

    Ask: is a violation reachable?

    Outputs, design guarantees

On an input: fails at once on legal traffic.

    cover

    Ask: is a witness reachable?

    Interesting scenarios

Missing: a pass that checked nothing goes unnoticed.

Worked example: the FIFO with each role annotated

The passing proof first, with every role in place: assumptions on reset and on the free tracking constant, assertions on counts, flags and data, covers on full, simultaneous transfer and the used-then-empty sequence. The overflow variant fails the output assertion at step 6, as a design bug should.

Misplacement one: an assertion on an input. The input push is driven by the environment, so assert (!push) fails on the first legal push, and the counterexample blames a design that is blameless.

Misplacement two: an assumption on an output. assume (count <= 4) looks harmless, since it states what the range check should prove, but the engine deletes every input sequence that would drive count above 4. The overflow variant needs exactly such a sequence, so it now passes, and the range proof never gets to ask the question.

A tool may also offer restrict, a constraint for formal tools that a simulator ignores, where assume is checked like an assertion in simulation. Use assume where the bench should check the same rule; the engine treats both as deletions of behaviour.

    // not-run: restrict is a tool-level constraint, shown as a concept only
// assume property (@(posedge clk) !(push && full)); // checked in simulation, deletes behaviour in formal
// restrict property (@(posedge clk) !(push && full)); // ignored in simulation, deletes behaviour in formal

    What the review looks for

    • Every assumption is on an input or a documented cut point, never on a design output.

    • Every assertion is on an output or an internal guarantee, never constraining an input.

    • Covers exist for full, empty and every simultaneous-transfer corner.

    Verify and debug

Check the directives by side: list every assume and confirm each sits on an input the environment drives; list every assert and confirm each sits on an output or a relation the design owns. Then turn each assumption into a question for the neighbour's proof, and confirm each cover is reached.

Asserting on inputs. Symptom: an immediate failure on legal traffic, or a pass that checks nothing because an assumption pins the same input. Cause: the checker sits on the wrong side of the interface. Fix: assume environment rules on inputs, assert design guarantees on outputs. Found by reviewing the signal direction in each property.

Assume placed on a design output. Symptom: a fast pass that a planted bug does not disturb. Cause: the assumption deletes the input sequences that would reach the bad output value. Fix: move the constraint to the inputs, or prove it as an assertion on the design. Found by the surviving mutant and by the assumption audit.

“Assume versus assert: how do you decide?” Answer by side: assume on primary inputs for rules the neighbour owes you; assert on outputs for what you owe. Over-constraint risks vacuity; under-constraint risks false counterexamples. Every assume is an assert in the neighbour or at integration.

Check yourself An assertion on push fails in the first cycle of legal traffic. What is wrong?

The checker is on the wrong side: push is an input the environment drives, so the rule belongs in an assumption, and the design guarantee belongs on the outputs.

Check yourself An assumption on count makes the range proof pass. Why is the pass worthless?

The assumption removes every input sequence that drives count above 4, which includes the sequence the bug needs; the proof checks a smaller behaviour set than the one being signed off.
