    Assumption Taxonomy and Ownership

Classify each assumption by kind, owner, discharge target and lifetime, and show with a run that each one the bridge makes is load-bearing.

    Why it matters

A bridge proof passed and nobody could say what it had assumed. When the list was written down it had two entries, and removing either one made the good design fail. Job of this lesson: six kinds of assumption, each with an owner, a discharge and a lifetime, and the skid bridge's list classified and tested.

    The core idea

    Kind

    Example

    Owner

    Discharged by

    Lifetime

    Interface rule

    Upstream holds valid until accepted

    Integrator

    Assertion on the driving block

    Life of the interface

    Mode or configuration

    One parameter value per proof

    Verification engineer

    One cover per mode

    One proof run

    Reset and initial state

    The first cycle is reset

    Designer

Reset proof and a cover of first activity

    Whole project

    Environment timing bound

    Downstream answers within N cycles

    Architect

System argument and a latency cover

    Until proved

    Temporary simplification

A feature tied off for now

    Whoever added it

    A task that removes it

    Until the full proof

    Abstraction contract

    A tracked value stays constant

    Proof author

The idiom plus a bug partner

    Life of the abstraction

The most dangerous kind is the timing bound: it trims legal behaviour, so the proof claims less than the requirement. The bridge carries exactly two assumptions. Downstream timing and upstream bursts are left free on purpose: the stage must tolerate any of it.

Two chains side by side: the reset assumption leads to the reset proof and cover; the tracked-word pin leads to the tracked proof and its bug partner.
The bridge's two assumptions, each with its owner and the evidence that discharges it.

    Worked example

The bridge proves with both assumptions. Remove the reset assumption (a reset-and-initial-state assumption): step 0 is any state, and the good design fails at step 1 on three properties. Remove the tracked-word pin (an abstraction contract): the free constant may change from one step to the next, and a helper fails at step 2.

    Assumption

    Kind

Removed: result on the good bridge

    First cycle is reset

    Reset and initial state

    a_conserve, a_data, h_in_out fail at step 1

    Tracked word number is constant

    Abstraction contract

h_pos fails at step 2 (depth 2 passes)

Both failures are on the good design, so they are spurious: they show the assumption is needed, not that the bridge is wrong. What the assumptions must not do is remove real behaviour; the review lesson shows the opposite failure.

    What a reviewer looks for

    • Every harness assumption has a row with owner, discharge and lifetime; nothing is hidden in a comment.

    • Nothing is assumed about downstream timing: out_ready stays free, because the stage must tolerate any stall.

    • Every temporary simplification names the task that removes it; an unlabelled tied-off input is a finding.

    Verify and debug

Read the assumption list against the port list: each input is either a listed assumption or a stated freedom. Delete each assumption in a scratch copy; the result must change for a reason you can explain.

The assumption nobody owns. Symptom: a proof passes under an assumption and nobody can say who keeps it; a year later the environment changes and the assumption is false. Cause: the assumption was added to make a failure go away, with no owner and no discharging assertion. Fix: no assumption without a row: kind, owner, discharge, lifetime. Found by: reading the ledger for rows with an empty owner or discharge column.

Classify on sight: the opening-cycle reset is a reset assumption owned by the designer; the tracked-word pin is an abstraction contract owned by the proof author. Then say what happens when each is removed, with the step.

Check yourself The bridge proof assumes nothing about how long downstream may stall. Is that an omission?

No. It is the requirement: the stage must tolerate any stall. A stall bound would be an environment timing assumption with an architect as owner and a system-level discharge.
