    Choosing a Depth

Depth derived from reset length plus trigger length plus latency plus one, with FIFO full, overflow and wrap numbers measured on the 4-entry design and extended by the same rule.

    Why it matters

A guessed depth is a bet, and the design collects when the bug needs one more cycle. Depth is derivable: count the reset steps, the trigger sequence that arms the property, the latency from trigger to visible effect, and one check cycle. The script below turns that rule into a calculator and checks it against the three depths measured on the running designs, and the FIFO runs show a bound one short passing and the full bound failing.

    The core idea

Depth reaches what the property needs when it satisfies one inequality: depth is at least reset length plus trigger length plus worst-case latency plus 1. Reset length is the steps before the design leaves reset, normally 1. Trigger length counts every input step that arms the effect, including the offending input itself: filling a 4-entry FIFO takes 4 pushes, and an overflow also needs the fifth push. Latency is the extra cycles between the last trigger input and the cycle where the checked value changes: 0 for the occupancy count, which updates at the edge that closes the offending step. The plus 1 is the checking cycle. A run at depth D examines steps 0 to D minus 1, so a violation at step S needs depth S + 1.

The same rule gives the wrap: a pointer fault that only shows on the second traversal needs 2 times the entries in pushes. Large parameters push the rule past any practical bound: a 1024-entry FIFO needs depth 1026 even to fill and 2050 for a second lap. That is not a deeper run, it is a different strategy: a small parameter plus induction, or an invariant that removes the parameter from the question. Depth justifies the bound; the bound does not justify itself.

Worked example: one short, then enough

The first pair of blocks asks the cover question: can the 4-entry FIFO be full? The full state first exists at step 5 (reset at step 0, four pushes), so depth 5 does not reach it and depth 6 does. The first result is inconclusive, not unreachable: it only says the cover was not reached within 5, and the second run shows why. The second pair is the overflow bug, which needs the extra offending push: depth 6 passes and depth 7 fails at step 6.

Bounded to 6: four pushes fill the FIFO within 6 steps but the fifth, offending push is at step 5 and its effect on the count appears at step 6, outside a window that ends at step 5. The run reports no violation. Correct, and one step short of the truth.

At depth 7 the solver finds it: reset at step 0, pushes at steps 1 to 4 fill the FIFO, the fifth push at step 5 is wrongly accepted, and the occupancy property fails at step 6.

    Calculator: too deep, use induction

    What the review looks for

    • Every bounded entry shows its arithmetic: reset plus trigger plus latency plus 1, with the trigger convention stated.

    • Wrap and pointer properties use twice-the-entries depths, or say why induction covers them instead.

    • Large parameters are proven small plus inductive, never bounded at full size.

    Verify and debug

Confirm the trigger cover reaches within the chosen bound: the cover of full needs depth 6, so a depth-6 bound has no margin for a property about the next push, which the overflow runs above demonstrate. When the margin is zero or negative, lengthen the bound or narrow the property before trusting the pass. A cover that is not reached within the bound is inconclusive, not a statement that the state is unreachable: only a proven invariant or an exact reachable set says that.

A pointer wrap missed because the bound stops below twice the depth: the proof checks a FIFO to a depth that fills it once, and the wrap logic, which only acts on the second traversal, is never exercised. The symptom is a clean run with a broken wrap. The fix is the wrap depth from the calculator, or an inductive proof with a pointer invariant, found by covering the wrap event itself.

If asked to prove a FIFO never overflows for any depth, answer: assume only the input rules, assert pushes into full are ignored, carry the invariant that occupancy equals pointer distance within bounds, and close by induction. The small configuration finds the bug; induction removes the parameter.

Check yourself A 16-entry FIFO passes a bounded check at depth 20. Is the wrap logic verified?

No: the rule gives 34 for the second lap, and even the overflow needs 19. Depth 20 fills the FIFO once with a single step of margin but never traverses the pointers a second time. Either extend past 34 or prove the pointer invariant inductively.
