this, Scope Resolution, and Automatic Lifetime

The this handle identifies the current object and resolves name shadowing in methods and constructors. Method locals are automatic per call, but object properties remain shared state, so parallel calls can still race on members.

Overview

The this handle identifies the current object and resolves name shadowing in methods and constructors. Method locals are automatic per call, but object properties remain shared state, so parallel calls can still race on members.

Use this to disambiguate member variables from method arguments or local variables with the same name. The classic constructor pattern this.name = name prevents accidental self-assignment and makes intent explicit when initialization code grows.
