Constraints and Timing

SDC constraints, delay models and slack, and timing-driven synthesis.

  • 3topics
  • 15lessons

Constraints state what synthesis must hit, and timing analysis scores every path. SDC clocks, IO delays, and exceptions set the targets, while arrival, required time, and slack find the critical path. Timing-driven synthesis then spends restructuring and sizing where slack is worst.

Learning path through the constraints and timing topics.
Suggested order. Constraints first, then analysis, then optimisation.

Description

Time

SDC for Synthesis

5

Clocks, IO delays, and exceptions: the constraints synthesis needs.

40 min

Delay Models and Slack

5

Arrival, required time, slack, and the critical path over a cell DAG.

40 min

Timing-Driven Synthesis

5

How slack steers restructuring, sizing, and when to stop.

40 min

Tip

Derive the available time for one path by hand before trusting the tool: period minus delays and uncertainty. Hand arithmetic first, reports second.

Check yourself Why does over-constraining sometimes make results worse instead of better?

Margin beyond the real target spends area and power on a fiction and can push the tool into structures that hurt the true paths. The Timing-Driven Synthesis topic shows where margin helps and where it harms.

Interview

Typical screening questions from this part: derive available time on an IO path, define slack and the critical path, and read worst versus total negative slack.
