Resource Sharing and Arithmetic Inference

Sharing adders across operations, and when the mux costs more.

  • 4topics
  • 4lessons

Two operations that never run together can share one operator. The tool rewrites compatible arithmetic into ALU cells, trims every operator to its used bits, and pays for the sharing with steering muxes.

Exclusive operations as ALU cells.
Each exclusive operation becomes an ALU cell under a select.

Lesson

What it covers

ALU inference and alumacc

How add, subtract and compare become shared ALU cells.

Sharing adders and the mux cost

Mutual exclusion, the break-even rule, and the share pass.

wreduce and operator widths

Trimming operators to kept bits, with signedness intact.

Constant multipliers and carry tricks

Shift-add products and arithmetic through the carry-in.

Check yourself Two exclusive 8-bit adds share one adder through a mux. When is that a loss?

When the added muxes exceed the saved operator. Sharing saves one operator but always pays steering, so cheap operators lose.

Interview

Carry one sentence per lesson: compatible arithmetic becomes ALU cells, sharing wins only past the mux cost, wreduce trims unused bits with signedness intact, and constant products are shift-add around a free carry-in.
