Environment and Design Rules

Constants, disabled arcs, design-rule limits and units: the constraints that describe the conditions around the clocks and delays.

  • 4topics
  • 4lessons

Beyond clocks and exceptions, a constraint file carries the conditions the design operates in: pins held at constants, arcs that must not be timed, the limits on transition and capacitance, and the units everything is read in. This topic covers each and ends with sanity checks that catch constraint-file errors early.

Lesson

After it you can...

Case Analysis and Disable Timing

Choose between constants and disabled arcs.

Max Transition and Capacitance

Apply design-rule limits and read their violations.

Operating Conditions and Units

Avoid unit and corner mix-ups.

Constraint Sanity Checks

Run the checks that find constraint errors before timing.

Check yourself How do set_case_analysis and set_false_path differ?

Case analysis fixes a pin to a constant and lets the tool propagate it (removing the arcs that constant disables). A false path removes the check between named points without changing logic values.

Interview

Be ready to say why case analysis is preferred over a false path for a mode pin: it describes a fact about the design and reports can show which arcs it disabled.
