Pulse Width and Min Period

Checks on the clock waveform itself: how narrow a high or low phase may be, and how short the period may be, at a cell's clock pin.

  • 4topics
  • 4lessons

Setup and hold compare data against a clock edge. Pulse width and minimum period check the clock itself at a pin: each phase must be long enough for the cell to respond, and the period long enough for its internal timing. This topic covers the two checks, how a clock tree distorts the duty cycle, and the signoff rules.

Lesson

After it you can...

Minimum Pulse Width

Compute pulse width slack for both phases.

Minimum Period

Compute period slack and relate it to dividers.

Duty Cycle Distortion

Show how a tree narrows one phase.

Pulse Width Signoff

Review and fix these checks.

Related background: Clock Architecture and Skew and Uncertainty.

Check yourself What do setup and hold check that pulse width does not?

Setup and hold relate data to a clock edge. Pulse width looks at the clock alone, at one pin, and needs no data path at all.

Interview

Mention that these checks are on the clock, not on data, and that they matter most at memories, latches and clock gating cells.
